Completing the Book Text
In this section we cover the steps needed to get the
book to the final state before formatting for submission, either to
a publisher, a publishing service, or a printing company. This is
the point at which you, the author, can say the text is ready for
the reader, with the spelling and grammar correct, section, chapter,
and paragraph layout set, table of contents and front and back pages
are in place, and the physical size of the book and number of pages
have been determined. The section will show you how to create the
first of a two-part package, text and graphics that actually
completes the book.
Proprietary
Rights, The Legal Components
The actions needed
to copyright the work by obtaining a Library of Congress Catalogue
Number, {LCCN}, and the International Standard Book Number, (ISBN),
are detailed. Also legal resources on contracts, and rights, how to
form your own contract, and how to protect yourself from
exploitation in the marketplace, (proprietary rights), and how to
write under a
pseudonym are provided.
* The following sections are nearing completion *
Formatting
the Book For Submission
In this modern
age there are few publishers or printers that cannot use a properly
electronically formatted manuscript, and graphics package to produce
a book. Formatting the book in proper electronic / computer form
provides compact and safe storage of the work, and will also allow
for future reference and correction with ease. The information
about, and resources for, the programs used to format the book are
contained in this section.
Creating
the Cover
The packaging of
the book, how to create the images, which convey the content or
feeling of the book in graphic form, is the subject of this
section. Also you will learn how to create and embed the European
Article Number, (EAN), bar code, which book retailers, as well
wholesalers require on the cover of all books they handle.
Publishing
the Book
Once the book
content and graphics are completed and formatted, the next step is
to submit it to either an agent, publishing house, publishing
service, or to self-publish the book. These options are discussed,
and resources and information to help you decide and proceed are in
this section.
Promoting
the Book
If one has
decided to submit the work to, and been accepted by a publishing
house the publicity is usually handled by them. If the author uses
a publishing service, or takes the self-publishing route, the
responsibility to promote the book is retained by the author. This
is the most important aspect of success in the literary world, and
there are many variables in the equation, many paths available, and
many things to learn. If one chooses, and is successful with, the
agent / publishing house route this information will be invaluable
in understanding how your book is being marketed, even though you
will probably have no control over the methods. Promotional
resources and information, which allow the author to personally
handle book promotion, are presented here.
Managing
the Book
After the book is
listed with the online stores and in the brick and mortar stores the
author can follow and affect the way the book is presented.
Information on this subject is found here.
